Indoor Winter Workout

28 Jan

We had a snow day today!

It actually didn’t snow all that much, but there was a wintry mix that coated everything and made quite a mess. Now, it’s just raining, so I’ll be back in the swing of things tomorrow!

My gym has a policy that if the school district where it’s located closes, then group exercise classes are canceled. Well, what do you know? That happened to be the case today! I usually take CX Worx on Mondays, and I had also planned to do a little cardio today.

No biggie! I got my workout in at home, without having to venture out in the sloppy weather.

Disclaimer: I’m (obviously) not a certified trainer, so the workout I created shouldn’t be considered as such. It worked for me – I was sweating and my muscles were shaking by the end.

I started with 20 minutes of cardio. I chose to do a dance workout from the fitnessglo website. I’ve been loving the different dance workouts that are available! I’m too shy/easily embarrassed to take Zumba or other dance-style classes, so these work out perfectly for me!

To do the strength portion of this workout, you’ll need a set of weights (whatever you’ve got or works best for you!) and a resistance band. I purchased my resistance band years ago at Target, so I don’t remember the exact cost. I do know that it wasn’t too expensive, though.

I modeled the strength moves off of different exercises I’m familiar with thanks to BodyPump and CX.

Here’s a look at some of the moves that might require a bit more explanation… (Sorry for the poor photos, but Chris wasn’t around to help me get quality pictures. These pictures actually make me laugh!)

Resistance Band Leg Lifts + Squats

Place the resistance band under your sneakers and twist in front. Holding the handles at your waist, lift your right leg and pulse diagonally back for 8 counts, then squat for 4 counts. Repeat on the left side, then repeat the whole thing 2 more times.

Resistance Band Rows

Put the resistance band handles around your sneakers. Grab the band about halfway down and pull straight back for 8 counts. Then, change your grip to underhand and pull back for an additional 8 counts. Repeat the whole thing 2 more times.

It’s only the end of January, so I’m sure this workout will come in handy throughout the winter on those days where I just can’t bring myself to leave the house!

How often do you workout at home? I usually prefer to workout at the gym, but if I’ve got a plan – like this! – working out at home is a great option, too!

Ohhh look at you getting creative with the workout! That sounds like a great workout. And I am going to have to look into those dance videos. I love Zumba but I don’t belong to a gym so that’s not so much of an option!

I workout at home maybe once a week, if that? I like to do some yoga podcasts at home but I typically thrive off of the energy in classes.

I hardly ever work out at home. I really like going to the gym because I stay there longer than I would working out at home.

It’s about 50/50. It definitely depends on what I am doing that day.

Great workout!! I’ll either take Roxy for a walk, or I’ll head to the gym & use their treadmills. I find it nice to get out of the house a little throughout the day :) .

That’s a totally bummer that classes are cancelled if school is. .. but I can understand why! I do group fitness classes at the YMCA (usually teaching!) otherwise, I run outside or on the treadmill at home.

I’ll have to check out the fitnessglo website – I’m always too awkward/embarassed to take a zumba class too! But good for you for still getting a workout in even though the gym was closed. I find that it always kills my motivation when something like that happens!

I have started to try and create circuits to workout inside. The challenge has been finding a good balance between cardio and strength. I usually write up a circuit real quick and then get everything ready. Lately I have been trying to alternate cardio and strength. I watch my heart rate and add a few Burpees, jack jumping jacks or mountain climbers if I feel like I need to increase my heart rate. I am loving it so far. I haven’t been using bands though. I am excited to those to it.

The CX Worx class — by Les Mills — that my gym offers uses resistance bands for the majority of the class. I never realized how much you can use them for — they’re great and definitely worth the small investment.

I need to get a resistance band! I have been doing the Jillian Michaels ’30 Day Shred’ video while I nanny. The little girl will even do the cardio portions with me :) Sometimes you just have to take your workout indoors, at home!
