My Favorite Home Websites

27 Jul

Ever since Chris & I moved into our house, I’ve found myself browsing more & more home-centered websites. I’ve been looking for everything – from DIY ideas, to design tips & ideas, & simple how-tos for home maintenance (we’re new at this, after all).

There are a handful of websites that have become my go-tos & I wanted to share them with you all, since I know many readers are new home owners or perhaps have home ownership on the horizon.

Young House Love

Young House Love – a blog written by Sherry & John Petersik – documents the duo’s adventures in DIY. The ideas are wonderful, the pictures are beautiful, & the writing is well-done; I look forward to every new post! What I enjoy most about this blog is the “no rush” feel I get while reading. The Petersiks take their time & think through each idea they have for remodeling their home & I both envy & appreciate that approach.

The Nest.com

Most women are familiar with The Knot, the ultimate resource for all things wedding. The Nest is its counterpart. There are tons of great resources available on The Nest – decorating ideas, a guide to the home-buying process, & much more (recipes & budgeting are other favorite categories).

BrightNest.com

I first heard about BrightNest from Ashley. From the BrightNest website…

“BrightNest is a free service that helps homeowners by providing customized tips, weekly reminders and step-by-step instructions on how to care for their home. When you sign up, it only takes us one minute to create a custom “owner’s manual” for your house. Then, we deliver weekly “to-do’s” to your dashboard and Inbox. These short, proactive tasks are designed to be easy to understand and complete, so you can save money and prevent expensive issues.” (source)

The custom owner’s manual is helpful, but I think my favorite feature of BrightNest may be the blog. I added it to my Google Reader & love the ideas that are posted (usually twice daily).

Last, but not least…

Pinterest

Of course I couldn’t leave out my beloved Pinterest! Most people already know that Pinterest is packed with a plethora of ideas for pretty much anything. I’ve created “For the Home” & “DIY” boards & have been pinning to them like crazy. The key is to remember to check out these boards & actually utilize some of the ideas (that’s the tricky thing about Pinterest… remembering to use it!).

Before I go, I wanted to announce the three winners of the GoodBelly giveaway.

Using Random.org, the winners are #1, 4 & 5…

Alysha, Amye, & Kacey… congrats! You’re going to love GoodBelly. Look for an e-mail from me shortly! :-)

I love looking at Pinterest for new home ideas! Only bad thing is that it makes me want to re-do room after room. Great for my house, bad for my wallet!

Thanks for the shout out! I’m loving BrightNest even though we haven’t moved into our house yet. It’s nice to have a place to record appliance brands and model numbers, paint colors, etc. and I love that everything is tailored to what’s in your house and the region you live in – for example, NC has lots of termites so we’re learning an annual termite treatment is the norm.

Have you seen Houzz.com? lots of pictures that pop up on Pinterest seem to be from Houzz. it’s more design-focused and a nice site to browse if you enjoy seeing rooms decorated and finished.
