Probiotics

16 Apr

Hi everyone!

Thank you for all of your kind words about Stewie on yesterday’s post. Here’s a quick update for you all…

Stewie went to the vet this morning, just to double-check that nothing was wrong. After a few more tests, the vet determined that there is something wrong with the disc(s) in his neck. I wish I could explain it better, but obviously I’m not a vet & can’t articulate it quite as well as the doctor could.

To help with his neck pain, he was given some medicine & he will be on “strict rest” for the next 4 weeks – no rigorous playing or long walks.

The tests that he went through today were painful (which we could tell from the horrible wincing sounds he was making!) but Chris & I are both happy that we know what’s wrong & can work on getting him better!

Now, onto the topic of probiotics. (Sorry; there’s not really an easy transition from dog health to tummy health! :-) )

A few weeks ago, I was contacted about trying GoodBelly probiotics.

Of course I had heard of probiotics before, but I wasn’t 100% sure of what to expect from the product.

Luckily, the GoodBelly website provides tons of helpful information on probiotics & the products they sell:

  • “Probiotics are living microorganisms, which, when taken in adequate amounts, have a beneficial effect on the body. Not all beneficial bacteria are given this heroic ‘probiotic’ title, though. First and foremost, in order to be deemed a probiotic, the strain must be shown to survive the stomach’s acidic environment in order to reach the rest of the digestive tract where it does the majority of its work.”
  • Probiotics help to promote digestive health* in several ways.
  • Digestive health & the immune system are strongly linked; one must have a healthy digestive system to have a healthy immune system.
  • GoodBelly products come in a variety of forms, depending on your lifestyle & how you wish to consume your probiotics. (Check them all out here!)

* “Some studies suggest that GoodBelly’s probiotics may help balance bacteria in your gut when consumed daily as part of a nutritious diet & healthy lifestyle. GoodBelly is a food product & not a treatment or care for any medical disorder or disease. If you have any concerns about your digestive system, you should consult your healthcare professional.”

GoodBelly offers customers a “12-day Challenge” – if you try their products for 12 days & don’t feel satisfied with the results, they will refund you for a 12-day supply. (You can read more about this challenge here.)

I finally got the chance to track down some GoodBelly (I found it at Wegman’s) & figured there was no time like the present to get started on the 12-day challenge. I’m fully stocked & ready to go:

I purchased three different flavors – strawberry, blueberry acai, & mango, & I tried out the mango first:

I was impressed with the taste, but I imagine it’ll take a few days to determine if I feel any better/different, physically.

I definitely plan on letting you all know how the 12-day challenges plays out once it’s complete!

Have you tried any probiotic products? Do you find that they help your digestive health?

Disclaimer: I was provided coupons to try GoodBelly probiotics out for free, however any & all opinions will be my own!

I have tried probiotics and actually though they helped a lot for all the issues I was having with my stomach. It was crazy painful but thankfully, those issues aren’t near as bad as they were but I did like using them- mine were in pill form though.
Glad you know what the poor little guy’s problem was- hopefully the rest and meds make him 100% ASAP!

AWww, poor Stewie! But glad you got some answers and he is on the mend!

I definitely believe in the healing powers of probiotics. GOod belly is awesome! I use to drink one of these every day when my chron’s was in a flare. Love the little smiley faces on the lid. :)

Do you know if Good Belly has more probiotics than greek yogurt like Chobani? I think most yogurts have probiotics, so maybe this one has more?

I’m not sure, but that’s a great question! I always have a scoop of plain Cho’ in my overnight oats & another yogurt at lunch so with the addition of GoodBelly, I’m going to be on probiotic-overload! :-)

The vet kept telling us we need to teach him to speak English! It’s so difficult since they can’t tell you what hurts! I guess that’s why he makes the big bucks! ;-)

You’ll have to let me know how you like these! My patients ask me about probiotics a lot, so maybe I’ll have another product to tell them about! :)

I first tried a local health food store, but they were out of stock. Not sure if there’s a Wegman’s near Shippensburg, but that’s where I got them! They only had to small drinks though, not the cartons.

Your uncle started taking probiotic capsules faithfully after is “episode.” He states it does seem to help his system and he has been taking them daily, even making sure they were with him on our trip to SC. I can tell you that they must be helping him or he wouldn’t continue to take them. Good luck.
