What’s in a Name?
13 Oct
Lately, I’ve been taking notice of all of the downright silly nicknames I have for those in my life & by “those,” I mostly mean this guy:
Stewie answers to all of the following:
- Stewie (obviously)
- Stew
- Stewart (& Stewart Little)
- “Bubba” (his name when we got him at the shelter)
- Pook/Pooker/Pookie boy
- Stewbot (we say he looks like a robot when he walks)
- + many more that I can’t remember right now
Growing up, I never had a “real” nickname, but I never had a need for one either! My family calls me “Eir” (pronounced like “air”), but that’s it.
Then, when I got my first teaching job out of college, it finally happened – I got a nickname! My students called me “EKom,” which was a combination of my first initial & the first part of my (maiden) last name. But alas, my EKom days are over & now I’m just back to being “Erica.”
Well that was rather random, no?

Today is my week day rest day, so I had a little extra time to put together a more “complete” dinner. It’s been a rainy few days here in PA, so comfort food sounded pretty appealing.
I adapted this recipe from Julie’s blog to create…
BBQ Turkey Meatloaf
Here are the changes I made to the original recipe:
- Used lean ground turkey instead of lean ground beef
- Omitted chili powder
Ok, ok, I didn’t do too much “adapting.”
When the meatloaf was almost done, I made some quick (read: instant) mashed potatoes (is there anyone out there who loves mashed potatoes as much as I do?!), & some quick (read: frozen) corn for side dishes.
A fairly well-rounded meal & perfect for a dreary evening!
The best part? Leftovers for lunch tomorrow!!!

Before I sign-off for the evening, I have to wish my parent’s a happy 32nd wedding anniversary!
Do you have any nicknames? How about nicknames for your pets?
What is your favorite “comfort food”?

Quick sounds much tastier than frozen haha. Stewie is so cute
Thanks! He’s an awesome dog!
Turkey loaf sounds like an awesome idea!
It was delicious!
I have never had a nickname. For some strange reason I’ve always been unbelievable attached to my name. Not that I like it that much- it’s just MINE. I refuse to be called anything other than Julie or my Mrs.H—– at school. I just like for me to be me. Weird, I know!
aw! )
Happy Anniversary to your parents!!! That is amazing! (I think I can see a little of both of them in you
I have always been told I look like my dad, so I’m sure my mom will be happy to see your comment!
I always hated nicknames. The worst was when my soccer coach called me Lin… There were 3 lindsays so we all had to have a nickname. I definitely think you look like your dad.
Thanks “Eir” for the Anniversary wishes (and thank you Julie H.) Did I ever tell you that Grandpa use to call me Donna-Bons, love that memory of my Dad. Growing up my high school friends would sometimes call me “DK” and a few people at work call me that from time to time. But those dogs of ours get more nicknames than anyone I know. Good night to my “Tobey Macaroni, Tysonator, Stewie Bob-A-Louie and Chancy Pants”.
I have had so many nicknames…Nik, Pickle, Pickle butt, Peanut, and the list goes on and on. As for my animals, they basically respond to anything at this point because they have so many nicknames as well. For example: My cat goes by Geno, Gene, Gene-Genes, Boogs, Boogie, Ween, Kitty, and much more. I find it more exciting that way haha
