Savvy Shopping Continued & Homemade Sunflower Seed Butter

26 Sep

Well the title pretty much says it all, doesn’t it? ;-) What can I say; it’s been a long Monday so my creativity is waning!

First up, I forgot to mention two of my favorite savvy shopping tips in yesterday’s post, so I wanted to share them tonight!

Lauren commented about this first one on last evening’s post (thanks for reminding me Lauren!)…

Buy Generic

I frequently buy generic products instead of brand name items (Market Pantry, anyone?). Very, very rarely can you notice a difference in the taste of the product!

To be honest, the few products that I purchased generic of & could taste a difference with were usually condiments! Items such as pasta, sauces, & fruit snacks (yes, I’m 5) all taste exactly the same!

“Frequent Buyer” Cards

The grocery store that I frequent offers a “Bonuscard” that usually saves me at least $5.00 per visit! Plus, in addition to saving money, there are some store sales that are only available if you have a Bonuscard.

Another “bonus” to the card? At my store, you earn .10 off a gallon of gas at the store’s gas station for every $100 you spend (you can build up your savings over quite a few weeks).

If YOU have any other tips, please share! :-)

**********

I’ve seen tons of bloggers mention sunflower seed butter & their love for it. I’ve even spotted it on the shelves at Trader Joe’s myself. However, being the “savvy shopper” that I am, I’ve avoided purchasing it since it was something I didn’t really need & cost upwards of $4.00.

Then, a few weeks ago, I saw this post on Mama Pea’s blog! I could buying the ingredients to make my own sunflower seed butter! (It ended up costing me about the same as the jar, but I got the satisfaction of making it myself!)

Yesterday, I finally decided it was time to whip out my food processor! I followed Mama Pea’s recipe, but added an extra tablespoon of oil to help with the consistency.

Immediately, I spread some sunflower seed butter on some leftover beer bread. I also made a sandwich for lunch today & an after-school snack with it as well (tortilla + sunflower seed butter + Nutella = not pretty, but delicious!).

I love the consistency of this butter & the fact that it tastes so much better because it’s homemade.

What should I try to make next in my food processor?

PS – I know the comment error still exists, I just haven’t had the chance to look into it yet… forgive me! :-)

I still haven’t tackled the nut butter attempt, but one day! I’m confident of that.

I vote that you make pesto or hummus :)
