I promised a vacation recap, and I’m here to deliver! We arrived in San Francisco on a Saturday, and stayed through Tuesday morning before traveling on to the Sonoma-area. I decided to break my recap down into two parts; first up, San Francisco!
After getting in around 3:30PM (PST), and not eating dinner until around 7:00, we had a very early bed time and consequently were up pretty early on our first full day! That was okay though; we had a lot on our agenda!
We hoped in a cab (we stayed in the Union Square area at Parc 55), and traveled up to the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Our first stop was Pier 39 to visit the sea lions.
You really have to see this for yourself to believe it; there were so many of them. Chris and I could’ve stayed there for a while watching them, but we had an 11:00AM tour of Alcatraz to get to.
The Alcatraz tour is a self-guided/audio tour, and so, so informative! Chris and I love doing stuff like this, and we were truly interested in learning as much as possible about the famous penitentiary.
Chris even “tried out” one of the solitary confinement cells.
Towards the end of the tour, we came across a special “session” being offered called “Call a Con.” They actually called up a former inmate (who has since turned his life around, obviously!), and were discussing his experiences at Alcatraz—so fascinating!
We stayed on Alcatraz Island for about 2 hours, then we headed off to lunch. After lunch, we ventured off to Ghirardelli Square, where we each got a milkshake—chocolate/caramel/banana for me! It was delicious but I couldn’t finish it because it was actually pretty chilly!
Next up was a cable car ride. I knew that the wait could take a while, and we ended up standing in line for about an hour and a half before taking our ride back down to our hotel. It was worth the wait though; riding a cable car is just something you have to do when you visit San Francisco!
At the end of day one, we were super exhausted. Of course we hadn’t adjusted to the time change, and we had spent the whole day sight-seeing. We ended up falling asleep before dinner, and not waking up until the next morning!
After a much-needed breakfast, we were off to the Golden Gate Bridge.
After taking a few photos, we began our trek across the famed bridge. It’s about 1.7 miles (one-way) so a walk over and back is no joke! It was also quite windy, but still pretty enjoyable and a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
We were pretty hungry afterwards, but I had one more stop I wanted to make before we went to lunch…
I needed a Full House/Painted Ladies picture—mission accomplished!
We grabbed lunch near our hotel, then headed back to our room for a little bit of relaxation; it was vacation, after all.
We finished off our second day with dessert for dinner at our hotel—perfection!
Have you ever visited San Francisco? Any once-in-a-lifetime vacation moments that stand out to you?
